Street work
Association members specialized in harm reduction meet drug users
in the streets, squats, waste lands and the neighbourhoods, to distribute
and exchange harm reduction material, inform them and improve their
awareness, and lead them to professionnal help.
Syringes exchange bus
There are mobile risks reduction programs (buses) in some cities.
In Alsace, only Strasbourg benefits from this program, which is supported
by the Espace Independance association.
Syringes dispensers / exchangers (Totems)
These machines are installed in some cities to allow individuals to either
exchange for tokens delivered by the Association'used syringes for new ones or to receive new syringes in
tokens delivered by the Association's members working in the risks reduction
program or by pharmacists.
In Alsace, there is one Totem in Strasbourg supported by a collective association
and two Totems in Mulhouse managed by the AIDES association.
"harm reduction centers"
These are first line welcoming places for drug addicts, whith no reservations,
to facilitate socialization, access to information on harm
reduction, to sterile material exchange programs, to first aid treatment
(infirmary available), and to facilities where they can wash themselves and their
clothes, and have a light meal: minimal services to which drug addicts
do not have access because of their poor social condition.
In Alsace the only harm reduction centers is located in Mulhouse and is operated by Argile Association.
Substitutive treatment
To offer opiate users (heroin, codeine...)
the possibility to decrease or stop the use of these drugs
by replacing them with an adequate and managed treatment.
This also allows them to considerably reduce the health risks linked
to their addiction (among others, AIDS and type
C Hepatitis transmission).
