Like Subutex®, methadone is substitution medication
(which can be found in France as a syrup) for opiates dependency.
Such a treatment can be prescribed by any physician working in a SDAT
(CSST) , in a clinic or in a hospital, and the renewal by a general
practitioner.
It can however be contra-indicated in case of gastric or duodenal antecedents.
methadone allows
- Avoiding the withdrawal syndrome,
- Reducing or eliminating the opiates consumption.
Provided the taking indications are followed
- Unless exceptionally specified, only one take per day, preferably
in the morning,
- In varying quantity according to the results of urinary analysis.
Methadone is not
- Toxic for the liver,
- An antidepressant,
- A short-term treatment,
- An illegal drug : it does not produce euphoria and it is not a tranquilizer,
whatever the consumed quantity,
- Injectable : its components are toxic for the venous system (abcesses,
obstructed veins, …) and the liver (risk of hepatitis).
